My favorite markets for fresh, local finds
One of my favorite things about summer is gardenening, i.e. fresh produce. Growing up, my dad planted a large garden full of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, silver queen corn, and mulitudes of other vegetables. At the time, I didn't understand the true value in a garden - prepping the soil, planting the seed, watering and waiting for it to grow for that harvest and the pure joy of having grown something on your own to eat and enjoy. Now that I'm older, I have such an appreciation for those memories and grow my own mini garden now each year. My overall contribution to the large gardners of the states though is frequenting the farmers markets to support local farms.
Farmers markets have been so much more than just produce. Now most markets offer fresh meats, breads, jams, pastries, flowers, dog treats, and even services such as knife sharpening. I love to go peruse the markets on a Saturday and see not only the variety of goods, but how proud people are to showcase their hard work (as they should be)!
I hope you take time sometime this summer to get out and support those small business owners and farmers who are putting in the time each and every day!
Peachtree Road Farmers Market - Top Farmers Market Pick
I'm not sure whether it's the location, in the heart of Atlanta and close to almost everything, the fact that the vendors are so lovely, or the variety of offerings this farmers market has to offer, but it might just take the cake as my favorite.
Peachtree Road Farmers Market runs from early Spring (March) through the Fall/Early Winter (December) on Saturdays from 8:30 AM - 12 PM. There are a plethora of parking options at the market or even nearby, and most for free. Pets are allowed as well, just must be leashed.
Some of my favorite vendors include:
Mcmullan Family Farm - flowers
Yom Ice Cream - push pop ice cream
The Last Straw - cheese straws)
TGM Bread - bagels and fresh loafs
Flaky not Flaky - scronuts
Georgia Jams - jellys and jams
Garden Grown Designs - cards and pictures
Sweet Auburn - bakery items
Country Garden Farms - produce and milk
Bread and Butter Farms -produce
Cartersville Farmers Market
Coming in at a strong second as the top farmers market pick is the Catersville Farmers Market. It runs on Saturdays in May to September from 8:00 AM - 12 PM. It is isn't as large as some of the other markets; however, the quality and variety of offerings is top standard.
My favorite vendors include:
Bonnin's Bakery - anything and everything, but the peach croissant, cinnamon roll, beignets, and foccacia are all amazing
Stilesboro Sourdough - all breads
Gibbs Girls Peaches - peaches
411 Farms - produce
AM Farms - produce
Marietta Farmers Market
I personally haven't been able to visit the Marietta Farmers Market yet; however, it's been rated Atlanta's #1 Farmer's Market and I hear is phenomenal. There are a variety of vendors, including more craft vendors than seem to be at other markets in the city,
The Marietta Farmers Market is open on Saturday's from 9 AM - 12 PM year round.
Dekalb Farmers Market
I'll tell you I'm not rating this one as it's not a traditional "vendor" farmers market, but an International market of anything and everything that stays open all year round. If you haven't visited the Dekalb Farmers Market, it is a must do when in Georgia. Ever not been able to find a spice at the grocery store, I can assure this place will have it; same with unique varities of vegetables and fruits.
The market offers anything you could think of, flowers (a florist too), meats, seafood, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, spices, baking neccesities, prepared meals and the list goes on. It's open seven days a week from 9 AM - 9 PM. You may never return to a traditional grocery store after you visit here.
